For the sixth consecutive year, the Lemus family's coffee is back with its charming aromas and great drinkability. As a filter, it offers a classic and indulgent cup with notes of chocolate and nuts — like taking a sip of hot chocolate. As an espresso, it pairs naturally with milk: its creamy texture and aromas of dark chocolate and hazelnut make for a delicious and versatile cup.
The history of coffee farming in the Lemus family dates back to 1958, when Juan Raul Lemus's grandfather first began growing coffee. Twenty years later, his father Baudelio followed in his footsteps. Today, Juan Raul, his brothers, and his sister have joined the family business to manage the 13 hectares spread across 4 plots of land belonging to the family. The Lemus family has a long and rich history of coffee farming in Mataquescuintla, which has allowed them to develop far more infrastructure than the average producer that Semilla, our importer, works with. This allows them not only to process their own cherries, but also those of neighbouring producers.
Juan Raul and his family are inspiring activists, fighting for their people, the Xincas. They are part of Café Colis Resistencia, which is fighting against a Canadian mining company operating a silver mine on Xinca land, threatening their livelihood. They also work to expand the community's sales opportunities beyond the local Guatemalan coffee market, which buys cherries at rock-bottom prices. We are very proud to support them through our partnership with Semilla, now for the fifth consecutive year! Their coffee is an essential part of our "Back to Origin" initiative, where $0.50 from every bag sold is paid directly back to the producer.
