The Pledge : transparency.coffee
Allan Melgar is a third-generation coffee producer, working alongside his father Fernando on their vast 28-hectare farm near Casillas, Guatemala. Together, they grow exotic and renowned varieties such as Gesha and SL-28 on their farm, Las Flores, but primarily focus on classic washed coffees with rich chocolate notes.
In 2022, Allan boldly experimented with the natural process, which is far from common in Guatemala, creating an exceptional micro-lot that Semilla eagerly purchased. Building on this success, he continued experimenting with naturally drying his coffee cherries, which now allows us to present this incredible coffee!
Despite their expertise and resources, Allan and Fernando were long limited to selling their coffee through local cooperative systems, never truly knowing where their coffee ended up. Thanks to Semilla, they are now building direct and transparent relationships with international clients.
Allan and Fernando are also key figures in Café Colis Resistencia, a bold movement created by Alex Reynoso to support Xinka coffee producers in Mataquescuintla. These farmers, often marginalized, fight for fair prices, market access, and technical resources. With their privileged position, the Melgars provide vital economic support to this community, embodying a spirit of solidarity and innovation. Their story reflects both the challenges and hopes of an industry marked by structural inequalities, as well as the promise of a future where small producers and Indigenous farmers can thrive through fair and sustainable practices.
