This coffee comes from the Cerrado Mineiro, in Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is a region that can be described as savannah but located at high altitude and especially known as carrot’s capital. In addition to producing nearly half of the country’s carrots, this region also grows onions, garlic, potatoes….and coffee!
It was not until 1970 that coffee began to be grown in the region. The quality has always been high, but the beans were not exported as specialty coffee. All lots were blended and sold as commodity coffee, at obviously much lower prices. But today, a new generation of growers is committed to changing this situation.
This is the story of Yuki Minami, who returned to her parents' farm to start producing specialty coffee. Long a specialty supplier in the region, Fazenda Santo Antonio has since invested in its fields, in raised drying beds as well as training, as part of Yuki's so far successful experiment in improving quality to get better prices.
Around the time Yuki resumed growing coffee, they purchased together a second farm, Olhos D'Aqua, which is just down the road. In 2016, Yuki partnered with other farmers in her community - a group of third-generation Brazilians of Japanese descent - to create Aequitas Coffee. Their first export of 2018 was with our import partner Crop to Cup.
Without Yuki, Crop to Cup would not be able to work in Brazil the way she does. She is a passionate woman who puts her heart into what she does and for the right reasons. Her coffee is almost as impressive, maybe even more so, because it has so much potential. We are thrilled to support Yuki Minami, along with her neighbors Edson Tamekuni and Michael Tomizawa, in the creation of Aequitas, a company that aims to produce coffee differently. In Yuki's words, "Aequitas is the Roman goddess of fairness. But she is also a goddess of justice and transparency. That's what I wanted to do: promote fair trade for producers.”
