The Pledge : transparency.coffee
Rudy has been immersed in the world of coffee since his childhood, thanks to his father who was a coffee producer at the time. At the age of 10, he and his brother would germinate coffee seeds and produce small plants, which they wrapped in plantain leaves to protect the roots. Having no land of their own to continue the cultivation, they would then sell them to their neighbors who wanted to start coffee farming.
At the age of fifteen, Rudy's father inherited a small piece of land, which was entrusted to him. This is how he officially began his journey as a coffee producer. Now 60 years old, he has been working on his own land for over 38 years.
For the past nine years, he has also been an integral part of the resistance group Café Colis Resistencia, which fights against a Canadian mining company exploiting a silver mine on the lands of the Xinca people, threatening their livelihood. They are also working to expand the community’s sales opportunities beyond the local coffee market in Guatemala, which buys cherries at ridiculously low prices.
We are very proud to support, thanks to the incredible work of our import partner Semilla, another producer from the resistance. To learn more about their fight, we invite you to visit the profile we have prepared on the Lemus family, who is also part of the resistance.
