This coffee was produced by small-scale producers in the county of Kirinyaga, located south of Mount Kenya. They deliver their cherries to one of the three factories (washing stations are referred to as factories in Kenya) of the farmer cooperative society (FCS) named Rungeto. Founded in 1997, Rungeto has 5480 members and produces around 550,000 kg of coffee every year.
The cherries delivered to Rungeto's factories are hand-sorted and then de-pulped, fermented, and washed like other washed coffees. However, an additional process, commonly seen in Kenya, is then applied; the beans are submerged in water for several hours (second wash), allowing the development of flavors to reach its full potential.
Rungeto promotes good agricultural practices to increase both quality and quantities produced, constantly seeks the best possible prices for their producers, and employs impeccable processes for cherry processing. It is these methods, coupled with the nutrient-rich soils of the region, that give this coffee its incredibly sweet and intense taste, along with its consistent quality year after year.
