It’s rare to be able to attribute the origin of a coffee so precisely in Rwanda. Thanks to the continuous efforts of Semilla, our import partner, and Emmanuelle Rusatira, the exporter and owner of Baho Coffee, it is not only possible to isolate the specific characteristics of the coffee growing in this particular microclimate, but it is also possible to specifically trace the 7 people who contributed to this magnificent red bourbon grown on the shores of Lake Kivu, on the Bikunda hills: Viateur Basabose, Valerie Nyiranzeyimana, Jmv Usekanabagoyi, Innocent Uwihoreye, Celestin Manirarora, Sylver Ugirabantu and Emmanuel Cyiza.
The cherries are brought to the NGoma wet mill within 6 hours of picking where processing is done under the watchful eye of Emmanuelle. He does things differently. In a country where more than 70% of the coffee is controlled by multinationals and bought at prices often even lower than the basic national fixed price, he pays his farmer partners attractive prices in addition to quality premiums, he works on various education programs, he offers financing and continuous assistance in the field.
By reaching out to producers in this way, Semilla and Baho can ensure that they will continue to work with them in the future and inspire the producers around them with the possibility of not only a solid remuneration for their coffee cherries, but also recognition and relationships that are not normally offered to small producers.
Emmanuel is one of a very small group of Rwandans who export their own coffee, which means that the profits stay in the country and are reinvested in the people and communities. There is a deep level of commitment and respect between Emmanuel, his employees and the farmers who deliver to Baho stations. Unlike many multinationals, he is directly invested in the future of his own country.
It is with pride that we offer you this Rwandan coffee; we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
