Bugoyi is located in the Western Province of Rwanda - near the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo and directly on the shores of Lake Kivu. Built in 2012 and purchased by Baho in 2016, Bugoyi is Baho’s largest station producing predominantly specialty coffee.

Baho coffee was established by Emmanuel Rusatira and his family, after nearly 20 years of experience establishing and managing washing stations throughout Rwanda for a large export company. Establishing Baho Coffee allowed Emmanuel to freely focus his energy towards implementing his own philosophies and pushing high quality protocols with 6 different washing stations.

Coffee production in Rwanda works very similarly to most other countries in Africa - thousands of smallholder farmers deliver cherry to centralized processing stations. Because the average farm size is less than a hectare, volumes per farmer are extremely low. Thus, selling to washing stations makes much more financial sense than building costly personal mills.

Bugoyi collects cherry from ~1300 farmers, producing ~1300 bags of exportable coffee annually, and employing 187 people at the peak of the season. On top of their standard wages, Baho pays into both health insurance and pension plans for all workers at Bugoyi.

Average production volumes on the small plots surrounding this station are quite low at only around 1.5 kg cherry per tree. This is mostly attributed to the extremely old trees in the area; many have been in production for close to 30 years. Emmanuel has been focusing heavily on growing Baho’s seedling distribution, and 16,000 were distributed to the Bugoyi farmers in 2019. Emmanuel has found that with his higher cherry prices, producers are becoming increasingly interested in investing in their coffee farms and growing future production.

Since 2019, Semilla, our partner, made it their initiative with Baho Coffee to work on getting past the washing station level to ensure direct traceability to the producers who grew every cherry they purchased. This is, frankly, a fairly revolutionary concept in Rwanda – while close track is often kept of cherry deliveries and the producers they’re purchased from, it’s very rare for groups to be isolated into geographic zones or by purpose. When Semilla expressed to Emmanuel their desire to work this way, he acknowledged that it would be difficult but he also was up for the challenge. They shared the perspective that this would not only add value to their work in that they were offering a level of transparency and traceability otherwise unheard of, but most importantly, it would serve as motivation for these producers.

Rather than simply delivering cherry to a washing station to earn a few more Francs as a subsistence crop, this could serve to show them that their work was valued by buyers and consumers and allow Semilla and Baho to work with them year over year, developing more holistic support in the form of health care, water lines, and coffee training. It’s a long way removed from the traditional approach of sending containers filled of coffee simply marked by the washing station name, with nothing else at all!

Incroyable!

Un des meilleurs café que j'ai jamais bu dans ma vie. Un goût très fruité et complex qui se développe en refroidissant.
