Elmer Arenas Mondragon is a third-generation coffee producer, owner of two small farms on the edge of the town of Vista Alegre. In addition to producing coffee, Elmer and his wife also grow plantains and guavas for personal consumption and to sell in their small neighborhood grocery store.
At the end of the 1980’s, large Peruvian cooperatives supported and encouraged the use of Catimor; a cross variety known to be disease resistant but offers little cup quality. Colasay is one of the only districts in northern Peru that has stayed away from the influence of these coops, while continuing to grow traditional varieties of coffee cherries. We therefore find very few Catimors on the territory, which is reflected positively in the profile of this Caturra.
Origin Coffee Labs, the Peruvian coffee exporter that allows us to offer you this coffee, works hard to ensure that producers in the region are paid fairly, while growing cherries of exceptional quality. They now have a collection point in the area for local growers and offer several coffee cherry processing workshops. Thanks to their work in collaboration with farmers, they were able to observe a significant increase in coffee bean quality received as well as in the yield of fruit trees.
