Busasa is a coffee from the washing station of the same name, located in the Muyinga region of Burundi. This washing station belongs to Matraco, a company run by Zuberi Matsitsi, a Burundian who dedicated to make a difference in his country's coffee industry. Busasa employs 6 full-time staff, as well as an additional 150 casual workers during harvest times. Staff are paid almost 60% more than the casual labor rate in Burundi.
In addition to producing its own beans from over 10,000 coffee trees, Zuberi also works with 1,600 local growers, focusing exclusively on specialty coffee. He has won the Cup of Excellence on several occasions for the quality of his coffees.
He does exceptional work with growers, offering decent, fair prices for coffee cherries, redistributing compost to help nourish land where access to various fertilizers can often be very difficult, and distributing seedlings to renew aging coffee trees.
Burundi is a country with a lot of poverty, where the coffee industry is very important and which could, with practices like those of Matraco, make a difference for the lives of thousands of Burundians.
